Southerness

Despite its remoteness, there are many beating a path to the clubhouse door at Southerness, and with justification, for this Mackenzie Ross course, built in 1947, is one of the finest in the land.

Here there is challenging, natural golf, amid heather and bracken, exposed to the fickle winds off the Solway Firth.

The splendid views from the clubhouse along the coast of Galloway inland to the mountain of Criffel and across the Solway, are memorable, and visitors always enjoy a warm Borders welcome.

Southerness is rare among the great links courses of Scotland in that it wasn't built until after the Second World War.

Another historical note is that the notorious Adminal John Paul Jones who joined the American revolutionaries in 1775 to harrass British shipping, was born very close to the present course.
