Royal Dornoch

Famous old golfer, Tom Morris had a hand in the early layout of the present course at the beautiful, wild and remote links of Dornoch. But the man who had most influence on its development was John Sutherland, a pioneer greenkeeper and Royal Dornoch's Secretary for more than 50 years.

Dornoch is a world famous and historic links. Records show that the game has been played there since at least 1616 and only St. Andrews and Leith can claim greater antiquity.

The organised modern game came to Dornoch in the autumn of 1876 when the local Chief Constable, Alex McHardy, and Dr Hugh Gunn, a graduate of St Andrews University, arranged a meeting to found the club.

It is only really Dornoch's remoteness in the far north-east corner of Scotland that has mitigated against it holding a Major Championship, although The Amateur was played there in 1985.
